It’s been almost a year since we featured Alfonso Huertra’s artwork (November 2012 V1 I8) he has been hard at work completing a number of pieces that have left us speechless and what could be more perfect than “Grandmother Luna” for our cover?!
Alfonso’s paintings, prints and drawings combine various media, including egg tempura, oil, pastels, charcoal, and watercolor to depict a series of serene still life studies and portraits expressing the beauty and sensuality of everyday life with a distinctly Mexican soul.  Originally from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Alfonso studied painting and life drawing at the Academia de Arte Municipal de Ciudad Juarez and at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City.  His paintings and drawings depict the lush and rich textures of his native Mazatlán with strong tropical flashes of color and surrealistic effects of saturated light and shadow.
As well as continuing to show his artwork in galleries around Austin and at STEAM Magazine’s 1st Annual Art Show in Corpus Christi, Alfonso has been working on illustrating an upcoming book. Alfonso told us, “Since the last time my work was featured in STEAM Magazine, I have been working on a series for a book entitled, “Little Monsters and Mayan Gods”.   This book concerns myths and legends of the Pre-Columbian Maya and was written by Carol Karasik.”
This series of fantastic images was realized using a variety of techniques, including watercolor, colored pencil, acrylic, Prismacolor, and a variety of printing techniques.  These techniques range from traditional metal plate etching, aquatint, and Photo Polymer Gravure in which a photo of the original painting is captured on a plate, inked and printed using the pressure of an etching press.  Also referred to as solar plate printing, the hand-created image is transferred via ultraviolet light to a plate that is light sensitive.
